for some reason i cant get ultrastar to open, it makes the whole screen black, plays the audio. but if i hit any buttons it shuts down with no error message, other then this one i found in the files.

Open the file config.ini with a text editor and change the line "FullScreen=On" to "FullScreen=Off" (without parenthesis).
If it still won't open - or at least show an error message - try updating your video card driver.

its no longer a black screen, but it just shows the frame and what ever was on top of it (if i had chrome open over it the image of what was on crome would be on it)

That is peculiar. Try installing Ultrastar Deluxe (check here) and see if that works.

Try to check for an update for your graphics card driver, anyway. I don't know why it should've stopped working when it did before, though.

i'm running an older laptop, its grapic card drivers are as good as their gonna get

I'm pretty much grasping at straws here, but you could try setting the Depth in the config file to 16 bit and/or getting the "Nightly build" from the USDX link above.
If all else fails, you can try other karaoke engines like Ultrastar (non-deluxe), Vocaluxe or Performous. Just copy the Songs folder from MLK.

I'm wondering what operating system you are using...

On my system I had to change the "C:\Program Files (x86)" install directory to be just "C:\Program Files", since I don't have an x86 folder.
For some odd reason on the game always wants to default to that install folder. (vista-32)

Ok, I'm leaning towards the video drivers here...

More than likely, you got the 'latest' drivers from the Dell website.  This is not ideal, because they tend to strip them down a lot. (all the manufacturers do).

So let's see about finding some full drivers for you.   The notebook you listed seemed to have a couple options for video card.  Do you know which one is in your system?

The easiest way to figure this out is to click start and in the 'run' or 'search start'(varies by operating system) box type in 'desk.cpl' and press enter.

The display settings window will open.  It will show a listing that resembles '1. xxxxxx on yyyyyy'.
Just tell me what the x's and y's are.

We replaced ultrastardx.exe with the second extention, I don't remember if we also changed the configuration.

Install the first disc normally, and install later disc manually (by copy pasting song folder from the CD to the install directory, by replacing all file named the same), and tell us if it worked.

ok, so it seems it was some form of issue of the moment, as it works fine now with both addons, its possible i had some form of virus, as i recently deleted a lot of adware and such after finding it in my files, so maybe thats why it didnt work, or prehaps the download didnt work right somehow and it didnt tell me for some reason. either way, its in working order with 430 songs.
