Title: [EQG2] Rainbow Rocks
Post by: sleumas2000 on September 13, 2014, 03:31:49 PM
On it now.

Does anyone have a preference between

a) Oh-wo-ah-wo-ah-woah
b) Oh using ~s

It's on Owncloud, and I've used a)

I prefer the former, too. Then again, I don't use ~ at all.
Anyway, I gave the song a go and here's my opinion:
The texting and the pitches are very good. Didn't have to change anything there.
The positioning was a bit off, though. I suspect that's a Yass thing, though, as I've seen it crop up in various Yass-created songs.
You should always give the song a once-over in the USDX editor, as it is game-accurate. And you should give it a go with the text editor, too, to correct linebreaks.
Also, try to leave at least a one beat break between notes whenever possible, and 2, better 3 beats between lines, as the game tends to cut off lines early when switching to the next line.
That said, here are my fixes:

Have you edited the file on owncloud, or not yet.
Also, thanks for the once over. I am a perfectionist, as you can probably tell, but I do miss things tool.

It is the new one already. I can tell a lot of work went into these files. But as I said, Yass might not be the best tool. It's good for quick copy-pasting, but for precision timing you need the USDX editor.

In That case - I should probably go back and fix the other ones of mine. - I used YASS for most of the editing because it's good for fixing connected words and linebreaks.
I ued to have to go through the TXT manually

Well, I have a solution for the whole "Oh wah oh wah oh wah oh" thingy.
It's not a part of the main lyrics.  It's a backup singer thing.

I offer as proof: My ever popular Pitch Reference Track (http://sta.sh/0mqg2bn4rye)

Oh, and I put a cleaner song.mp3 and a really nice instrumental on the cloud.

Enjoy!

- Replaced song.mp3 by the OST version (instrumental version untouched)
- Added video
- Added instrumental.txt

I thought it already was the OST version - I made the m4a into an MP3 until we had better quality. Unless someone's found better quality OST?

Hm, not for this one - it had some background effect noises, at least. I think that was Psychic's work actually (should we keep the audio from the film, or take that from the OST?)
The old file is still on Owncloud if you want to check that everything is as it should be :D

I had replaced the song.mp3 when I added the instrumental.  It had better stereo separations in the vocals.  I guess he didn't want the extra sound effects that that go with the video.

That was my first intent, yes. I must say that for now I can't really compare the sound quality between the two files (broke my headphones, using a crappy USB speaker for now) and only noticed the extra sound effects. Voices sound slightly different but I can't tell which version sounds better. The intro is different, too.

I'll have to trust you blindly on this. Which one should we keep?
(I guess the differences are too minimal to include these two variations)

In regards to timing and notes, the files are identical.  The movie version has some extra sounds at the start, due to the movie logo and other special effects.  In addition, the backup singers are separated more in the stereo space, and the bass is a bit sharper and doesn't drown out the vocals as much.  I personally consider the movie version better, since the source was 5.1 channel at 48khz unconmpressed instead of 44.1khz mp3.  It just allowed for more tweaking before the final downmix.

It helps to have headphones to pick up the differences.
That, and loading both into audacity and switching between the two as it plays.

Anyhow, I'd say you can pick either one.  I won't be offended with either, since I made both files. ;D

I'd actually tend toward the OST version for this track (instruments seems unobstructed by sound effects, especially for the section starting at 00:40) - but the movie mix seems to sound better on other songs (eg, Better Than Ever).

On Rainbow Rocks: I prefer the iTunes OST version, the lack of electric guitar on 00:40 to 00:49 is just weird
On Better Than Ever: Psychic version is definitively better, better bass and voice is closer to what I expect.

That works for me.  :)

Now if only the songs by The Dazzlings didn't have crossover issues...  I'm still checking out possible sources.

I'd still prefer to keep it. Even though it's technically backing, it's being sung by the main singing voice(s) as well.

^ that.
I agree - we should keep  the oh wah oh things.

With the sudden appearance of more source material, I was able to piece together what I think is a better instrumental version.  It's on the cloud as instrumental2.

Let me know what you think.

where is it?

EDIT: My client was just being stupid

Seems good to me. - are we having the Woahs in the game as sung, or not sung. because the woahs were left in the instrumental
Title: Re: [EQG2] Rainbow Rocks

As the "whoa"s are part of the backing, I can't remove them without destroying the audio.

I would recommend we keep them on the sing-along version, but remove them in the instrumental.txt... but that's just my opinion.
Title: Re: [EQG2] Rainbow Rocks
Post by: Renard on November 05, 2014, 11:19:11 AM
Well, it makes sense - these are backing vocals anyway, and karaoke versions of tracks usually has only the lead vocals removed so another main singer can step in.
Title: Re: [EQG2] Rainbow Rocks

sounds cool to me.
So just to clarify - they are in notes.txt but not instrumental.txt?
Post 150!

Correct.  We want to remove the 'whoa' lines from the instrumental.txt only.
