Title: [S3E13] What My Cutie Mark is Telling Me
Post by: StarStep on March 05, 2013, 03:25:58 AM
Hey everyone,
So this song has been stuck in my head and since I know I would be listening to it 50+ times in the next few days, I would do something productive and try to create a karaoke file for it.

Now some questions
At the end of the song, the long notes cross over into the following verse. So I just want the player to sing the first "It's got to be" and "My destiny" verses. Is there a way to make the second verses of these not have to be singable but people can still see them or would it be better to just take them out completely?

Here's what I've done so far tonight. Let me know what mistakes I've made with it. I'll try to start pitching it tomorrow.

Welcome aboard!
The text looks good so far, though I'd recommend you place the space between words on the next word (eg. "These" " an" "i" "mals" instead of "These " "an" "i" "mals"). For one, it helps with editing the .txt, but this board also clips off "unnessessary" spaces, so if you copy that text, every line becomes one long word.
At the line "Put a smile upon their face", it's not nessessary to split the word "smile" up.
I know what you're trying to do with the elongated lines. I've tried it with the extended Main Theme, and it looked good on USDX, but it glitched up the song on Performous. Also, I realized that even if it would work on Performous, it would look ugly because of the way that game displays freestyle notes.
Another thing that's not strictly an error but something I've found to be helpful: with a BPM under 300, you sometimes come across words that are either half a beat too short or too long. You can double the BMP while keeping the relative positions of your notes by opening the song in the USDX editor and pressing SHIFT+M. Don't forget to save (by pressing S) afterwards.
If you want to use the USDX editor for pitching, you can use SHIFT+Numpad- to reduce the pitch of the whole song to some audible level.

Welcome and a warm Thank You for your contribution! I'll test it asap ;)

In the meantime, I added it to our Cloud folder (if you wish to join the team and have access to the shared folders, send me a PM!)

I gave the song another, a bit more scrutinizing look, and it's good for a first-time effort. Some notes are a bit misplaced, though. Some start off a bit early, others (especially stuff that ends on "S") are too long. The USDX-editor's clicking feature (press P) is very useful to check if words start off where they should. Also, try to keep unresounding sounds (eg. S, F, or Th) to a single beat, both at the beginning and the end of notes.

ok I will give it another go around and try to keep all that in mind. I'll just scratch the second unsingable verses then. I elongated some of those 'S' sounds because it sounded like I could still hear the singers voices. I'll keep them shorter now.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll try to put it to good use :)

Yes! Tried it and noticed what you wanted to achieve on the last verses. I agree, this would be awesome!

Unfortunately, the way the USDX file format works don't really allow such a feat. For the sake of software stability, I'm recommending to - like you said - scratch these bits. Don't worry, in any party, people will sing the lines anyway (when I tried "At the Gala" in a convention, people took turn singing the backing vocals, and they were not even written on screen!)

StarStep, I hope you don't mind, but I took it upon myself to pitch the song using your taps. No Golden Notes, yet:

Now with improved audio, video and added Golden Notes. Get it while it's hot! (http://share.mylittlekaraoke.com/Uploads/What_my_Cutie_Mark_is_telling_me.zip)
EDIT: Added another 0.2 videogap for better sync. Updated it in the download as well.
